It comes as a shock to people that Satan actually goes to church. In fact, he actually runs many churches!

Our Lord cast out demons in the synagogue, and Paul wrote to the church of God at Corinth to warn Christians of Satan and his devices.

Nobody outside the Lord’s church can really hinder the cause of Christ, so that’s why Satan wants to get on the inside. If he can infiltrate the house of God, that’s where he can do the most damage.

I. In the pulpit

  • a. Satan has “servants” who preach – 2 Cor. 11:13-15
  • b. They come as “wolves in sheep’s clothing” – Mt. 7:15-20
  • c. They teach “doctrines of demons” – 2 Tim. 4:1-5
  • d. Therefore, we must put teachers to the test – 1 Jn. 4:1; Rev. 2:2

II. In the pews

  • a. Agents of Satan in the church are “false brothers” – 2 Cor. 11:26
  • b. Ananias and Sapphira allowed Satan to “fill” their hearts – Acts 5:3-4
  • c. Parable of the weeds – Mt. 13:24-30, 36-43

III. In the worship

  • a. It may come “with all power and false signs and wonders” – 2 Thess. 2:9-12
  • b. Some worship is “vain” or “empty” – Mt. 15:9
  • c. The Lord’s Supper can be an abomination – 1 Cor. 11:17-22
  • d. Some worship is idolatrous – 1 Cor. 10:19-21; 2 Cor. 6:14-17
  • e. Some worship music is designed to entertain rather than draw people closer to God. Satan loves that.

IV. In the business meetings

  • a. When strife and selfish ambition rule – James 3:13-18
  • b. Peter had an agenda other than the Lord’s – Mk. 8:31-33

V. In the leadership

  • a. Sometimes inexperienced or immature men are put in positions of leadership, and they let it get to their heads – 1 Tim. 3:6
  • b. Diotrephes loved “to put himself first” – 3 Jn. 9-10. He had to have his way and run the church. He did not have the spirit of Christ.
  • c. Somebody in one place told us that the congregation there would run people off if they didn’t like them.

How can we keep Satan out of the church?

  • By hating evil and loving good
  • By being the kind of people who honor the Lord in all things
  • By maintaining the “unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace” (Eph. 4:3)
  • By testing what is taught by the truth, and loving the truth at all costs
  • By exposing what is false, even if it is in our midst
