The Ultimate Sacrifice

Would you die for someone else? I’m sure most of us can think of at least a few people who we would die for. We even have heard of instances where people give their lives for strangers. When we think of our military, our troops risk their lives to fight for our freedom, even though they have never met most of us. The Bible speaks of the willingness of some to give their lives for others;

Would you die for someone else? I’m sure most of us can think of at least a few people we might be willing to die for. We even have heard of instances where people give their lives for strangers. When we think of our military, our troops risk their lives to fight for our freedom, even though they have never met most of us. The Bible speaks of the willingness of some to give their lives for others;

Romans 5:7

“For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die.”

When someone gives their lives for someone else, it is the ultimate sacrifice. They are giving away everything that they have built up in this life so that someone else can live on. And, there is no way that person can pay back the one who has given their lives because they are no longer alive to be paid back. Romans 5:7 states that someone might make that ultimate sacrifice for a good person, but consider the sacrifice of Jesus Christ;

Romans 5:8

“…but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Knowing our sinful nature, Jesus made the ultimate sacrifice for us, so that we might live on in eternity, should we decide to accept His gift. And, there is no way to pay him back, even though He still lives. To be pleasing to Him, we must accept his sacrifice through obedience and bear fruit in our lives.

We would feel indebted if anyone on earth gave their lives for us so that we might live a few more years, so why not feel indebted to Jesus, who gave His life so that we might live forever?
